Disney commanded the batteries in the attach on Tippoo’s earth-works at Seringapatam, April 1799. In November 1799 he was appointed hy Colonel Wellesley to the charge of Bednore. Bednore had been captured in 1703 from its Ranee by Hyder [Cotton, 1905, p. 256]

UNDER THIS MARBLE ARE DEPOSITED THE REMAINS OF FRANCES SMITH, YOUNGEST DAUGHTER OF JOHN AND ANNE ARBUTHNOT, OF MITCHAM IN SURREY, WHERE SHE WAS HORN ON THE 15TH JUNE 1772. SHE ACCOMPANIED HER SISTER TO INDIA IN 1798 AND IN JULY 1799 BECAME THE HAPPY WIFE OF JAMES SMITH, ESQ., IN THE HONORABLE COMPANY’ S CIVIL SERVICE AND AN EMINENT MERCHANT OF BOMBAY. EMBARKING FOR THEIR NATIVE LAND WITH HER BELOVED HUSBAND AND INFANT SON AND WITH THE MOST FLATTERING PROSPECTS IN VIEW, SHE FELL A VICTIM TO A FEVER ON BOARD THE HAWKESBURY INDIAMAN ON THE 21ST OF NOVEMBER 1801. HER EXEMPLARY CONDUCT IN EVERY STATION WILL LONG BE REMEMBERED BY THOSE WHO KNOW HER, AND LET THIS SIMPLE RECORD SENT FROM ENGLAND BY HER SUFFERING HUSBAND TO MARK THE GRAVE OF A GREATLY LOVED AND MUCH LAMENTED WIFE, INSTRUCT THE READER HOW INSECURE IS THE MOST ENVIABLE STATE ON EARTH.

The full inscription of this enormous tombstone [ca. 27 lines] is recorded by Julian James Cotton in his monumental volume, 'List of Inscriptions on Tombs or Monuments in Madras' [1905 ed., p. 256]. The inscriptions are mostly worn out, and it is one of the most difficult to read.

He married Louisa Whitehill, June 3rd, 1800. His wife was related to Eliza Draper (born at Anjengo, April 5th, 1744), whose mother was a Miss Whitehill and whose uncle John Whitehill was Governor of Madras in 1777 [Cotton, 1905, p. 257].

Murdoch Brown was originally in French employ, but eventually joined the Company’s service. In 1802 the Company desiring to abandon their cinnamon plantation at Randattera as unprofitable, Murdoch Brown resigned his appointment and took a: ninety-nine years’ lease of the garden, which made his fortune. At Tranquebar 20th October 1790 Murdoch Brown, Imperial Consul for the Coast of Madras married Eliza King...In 1798 Murdoch Brown was appointed overseer of the plantation which the Bombay Government, had cpommenced at Anjaracandy with a view to raising pepper, coffee, cinnamon, cassia etc. He became owner of the plantation in 1802-3 [Cotton, 1946, Vol. 2, p. 173].

However, Roberts and Chekkutty, 2013, Vol. 1, p. 166, has is wrong with the name and dates. In this list, it is 'J. Maria, Roman Catholic Vicar of Cannanore, died 29 February, 1844].

Capt. W. M. Warden died in command of H. M's. Ship Rattlesnake in the Bay of Bengal on the 5th of June 1807, aged 28. "To commemorate the private worth and professional merits of this promising officer, this monument is erected by his Commander-in-Chief as a tribute of regard to his memory [Cotton, 1946, Vol. 2, p. 174].

The story goes that he was cabin boy of a ship which was wrecked off Tellicherry. Murdoch Brown befriended him and procured him the appointment of Master Attendant. He left large legacies to build the church and support the European and Eurasian poor of Tellicherry [Cotton, 1905, p. 258]
